These are widely used in the healthcare, pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and life science industries. It is one of the important application areas as the choice of the membrane for this application depends on a number of factors. These factors include environments of the proposed application, degree of sterility required, chemical compatibility, biocompatibility, degree of hydrophobicity, device fabrication, and sterilization.

Medical membrane can be divided on the basis of their chemistry that are polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), polyethylene (PE), modified acrylics, and others. PTFE is an inert material that has good flow properties with high chemical resistance. PVDF is also a durable material with good flow properties and broad chemical resistance. PE is a material with excellent flow properties and broad chemical resistance. Based on the filtration technology, medical membranes can be divided into the following, ultrafiltration, microfiltration, reverse osmosis &dialysis, nanofiltration, and others.

The demand of medical membranes is projected to register higher growth for the hemodialysis application. Other major applications include infusion filters & sterile filtration and drug delivery. Currently, 347 Million people globally have diabetes. The diabetic population is projected to grow to 440 Million by 2030. India has the major share of the diabetes population with over 51 Million people having diabetes, followed by China with more than 43 million diabetic people. These people require hemodialysis.
