Adipic acid, an organic hydrocarbon, is a basic raw material for the commercial production of Nylon 6,6, one of the most important polyamides from industrial perspective. Adipic acid, a di-carboxylic acid, is commercially produced from benzene by converting it into KA oil and then oxidizing it with nitric acid. It is also produced by the carbonylation of butadiene, phenol-based, and bio-based production processes. Adipic acid is an important di-carboxylic acid as its application, Nylon 6,6, is used for various industrial sectors, including Textiles, Automotive, and Electronics. Apart from Nylon 6,6, its major applications include polyurethanes and adipic esters. It also finds usage as a gelling aid and an acidulant in the production of plasticizers and lubricant components.
